St. Lawrence Seaway
The Welland Canal is a man made waterway which includes a series of locks and
gateways in which large laker ships travel through to bypass the mighty Niagara Falls.
The Welland Canal is part of the St. Lawrence Seaway System and runs from
Lock 1 in Port Dalhousie, Ontario south to Lock 8 in Port Colborne, Ontario.
The Welland Canal runs parallel to the Niagara river approximately 35 - 50 kilometers apart.
Much of the Welland Canal is fenced off from public viewing. Lock 3 in
St Catharines offers
one of the best public viewings of the massive ships which
pass through the canal each year.
Lock 3 offers a museum, restaurant, viewing
platform, park, and plenty of free parking.
A great place to take the whole family to enjoy. Boat tours, fine foods, streetside merchants,
and entertainment throughout the day. The Welland Canal can also be viewed in the following
towns and cities:
Port Dalhousie
St Catharines
Thorold
Port Robinson
Welland
Port Colborne
The St Lawrence Seaway closes each year during the winter season from the end of
December till Mid April. The water is drained from the entire canal system for
maintenance each winter.
